Conceptual Learning Framework

The Beacon Academy utilizes the International Baccalaureate (IB) conceptual learning framework in its lesson planning, emphasizing the understanding of concepts as a central aspect of the learning process.

The conceptual learning framework encourages students to engage with big ideas and key concepts that transcend specific subject areas. This approach promotes critical thinking, inquiry, and connections between different disciplines.

Key elements of the IB conceptual learning framework include:

Key Concepts:

Fundamental ideas that guide the curriculum and help students make sense of their learning.

Related Concepts:

More specific ideas that provide depth to the key concepts, allowing for exploration within subjects.

Global Contexts:

Real-world situations that encourage students to apply their understanding and see the relevance of their learning.
This framework aims to foster deep understanding, encouraging students to think critically and make connections, ultimately preparing them for real-world challenges.

The Harkness Method

The Beacon Academy incorporates the Harkness Method in many of its classes. The Harkness Method is a teaching approach centered on student-led discussions. It involves a roundtable setup where students engage with each other and the teacher as equals, encouraging collaboration and critical thinking. This method promotes active participation, deeper understanding of the material, and the development of communication skills. It’s often used in classrooms that prioritize inquiry-based learning and critical analysis.

The Harkness Method originated at Phillips Exeter Academy, a private preparatory school in New Hampshire, USA, in the early 20th century. The Beacon Academy has a long-standing relationship with Phillips Exeter Academy.
